One simple way to help improve children’s sound awareness and spelling ability is to introduce simple word games.
There are lots of simple games described in this post that encourage children to listen, identify and manipulate the sounds in words.
For example, ask questions like:
“What sound does the word ___ start with”? “What sound does the word ___ end with?”
“What words start with the sound ___?”
“What word rhymes with __”?
These simple games can be played in the car, during a walk or in the house. Providing a little treat to reward their participation will help keep them engaged.
